Let’s Go Fly a Kite:

SOARING ACROSS BORDERS!

Students explore the science, design, and cultural history of kites. After researching how kites are used around the world, they collaborate to build and fly their own international-inspired kites.

Let's Go Fly a Kite!

Key Learning Objectives

Let’s Go Fly a Kite provides an engaging opportunity for students to explore the cultural, historical, and scientific aspects of kites through hands-on learning and global collaboration. Students will investigate the significance of kites around the world, examine the science behind flight, and design their own culturally inspired kites. The project emphasizes creativity, teamwork, and cross-cultural understanding.

Cultural Kites

Students will research how kites are used in various cultures — from celebrations and festivals to science and storytelling — gaining insight into their symbolic and practical roles globally.

Science of Flight

Students will explore aerodynamic principles such as lift, drag, and balance, learning how kite design affects performance.

Collaboration

Students will work with international partners to share findings, compare cultural perspectives, and discuss design inspirations.

Students will design and build a kite influenced by what they learn from their partner school, combining creativity with cultural understanding.

Creative Challenge

Subjects

  • Students explore the principles of flight, including lift, drag, and balance. They test how shape, structure, and materials affect kite performance, building understanding of forces and motion through hands-on experimentation.

  • Students investigate the origins and historical uses of kites around the world, from ancient China to military and scientific applications. This supports understanding of continuity, change, and the cultural significance of technological inventions.

  • Students learn how kites are used across cultures and continents, exploring their purposes in different regions—from recreation to communication and celebration—while building global geographic awareness.

  • Students use visual design and symbolism to create kites that reflect cultural traditions. They explore colour, shape, and narrative elements to convey meaning in their finished creations.

  • Students collaborate with international peers to research kite traditions, share cultural insights, and inspire each other’s designs. Their final kite reflects elements from their partner school’s country, highlighting creative exchange, cultural understanding, and global connection.

Project Outcome

Students will collaborate to design and fly a kite inspired by their partner school’s culture. Through this process, they will apply scientific understanding, cultural research, and creative design to build a functional, symbolic kite. The final product is shared with the global learning community, celebrating cross-cultural exchange, teamwork, and the joy of learning through flight.
